Art talk: The Artists’ Colony in Hornbæk

September 6th, 14:00 - 15:30

- DKK 100

Join us for a glimpse into Hornbæk’s art history with the talk “The Artists’ Colony in Hornbæk”. We will explore some of the most prominent artists who visited and depicted Hornbæk from the mid-19th century onwards.

Today, most people are familiar with the Skagen Painters – but before artists truly began making their way to Skagen, they settled in Hornbæk and established Denmark’s first artists’ colony in the 1870s.

These included artists such as P.S. Krøyer, Holger Drachmann, Viggo Johansen and Carl Locher, with many more following in their footsteps. In Hornbæk, the artists were fascinated by the beach, the plantation, the mountains of Kullen on the horizon and the local fishing community.

During the talk, we will look at paintings, drawings and prints from this period, as well as works from the Danish Golden Age by artists including P.C. Skovgaard and J.Th. Lundbye, who found some of their most idyllic motifs along the North Coast around Hornbæk.

The talk will be given by Ida Lehrmann Madsen, who holds an MA in Art History. Ida is, among other things, the author of The Artists’ Colony in Hornbæk, published in collaboration with the Hornbæk Local History Society.

There will be a short break during the talk, when coffee and tea will be available for purchase at the bar.
