Art talk: The Artists’ Colony in Hornbæk

October 13th, 16:00 - 17:30

- DKK 100

Come and gain insight into the art scene of Hornbæk through the lecture “The Artists’ Colony in Hornbæk”.
We will delve into the stories of some of the most renowned artists who visited and depicted Hornbæk since the mid-1800s.

Today, most people are familiar with the Skagen painters, but before artists truly began flocking to Skagen, they settled in Hornbæk. These included artists such as P.S. Krøyer, Holger Drachmann, Viggo Johansen, and Carl Locher — and many more followed. In Hornbæk, the artists were captivated by the beach, the pine forest, the Kullen mountains on the horizon, and the local fishing community. They became so enchanted by the area that several stayed for extended periods and formed close-knit artistic communities.

During the lecture, we’ll explore paintings, drawings, and prints from this period, but also look at works from the Danish Golden Age by artists such as P.C. Skovgaard and J.Th. Lundbye, who found the most idyllic motifs along the north coast near Hornbæk.

The lecture is held by Ida Lehrmann Madsen, MA in Art History, who has, among other things, published the book “The Artists’ Colony in Hornbæk” in collaboration with the Hornbæk Local Historical Association and Archive, “The Painters’ North Zealand” published by the Royal North Zealand National Park, and most recently contributed to the 2023 exhibition “The Artists’ Colonies Hornbæk & Arild” at the Nivaagaard Collection.

There will be a short break during the lecture, where coffee and tea can be purchased at the bar.
