Painters’ North Zealand
No other place in Denmark has attracted as many visual artists as North Zealand. We will look at some of the artists who found inspiration in the landscapes and towns of the region, encountering several artist colonies along the way. North Zealand has it all – long coastlines, deep forests, large lakes, ancient monuments, castles, and small villages – features that have drawn many of the greatest names in Danish art history since the 18th century. The period we know as the Golden Age is closely connected with areas such as Hellebæk, Arresø and Tisvilde, and from the mid-19th century Denmark’s first artist colony emerged in Hornbæk, led by figures such as P.S. Krøyer, Holger Drachmann and Carl Locher.
