Who we are

“It is the relationships between people that give life its value.”

With these words, Suz and Lennart Lajboschitz’s vision for Hornbækhus is simple: “We want to create a place that is for everyone, where people meet and talk together at the dining table and during various shared activities.” That’s why you won’t find televisions in the rooms, nor signs pointing the way around the house. Asking another person for directions is something we often look back on as a first encounter with a new friend, and a new relationship can begin.

For us, it’s important that you feel welcome and comfortable, just as if you were at home.

About Hornbækhus

Hornbækhus is a red wooden house that was built in 1904. Historically, the house has served as a guesthouse or hotel since then, and the building still looks much like it did when it first opened its doors to guests in 1905. At that time, Hornbækhus was mainly a guesthouse for wealthy Copenhageners. But much has changed since then.

In 2018, the married couple Suz and Lennart Lajboschitz took over Hornbækhus. After a thorough renovation of the house, Hornbækhus was able to reopen its doors to guests in 2018. Suz, who is also the owner of the design company EEN, transformed the interior of the hotel into what you experience today. But it wasn’t just the inside of the house that was renewed. When the hotel reopened, it came with a new spirit focused on human values and communities. That’s why televisions were removed from the rooms, and throughout the year, you’ll find events and communal activities in the house, where both hotel guests and locals come together. Communal dining is a highlight in the house’s daily routine, taking place every day in the large dining room. The everyday activities also include a regular running club, morning yoga, creative workshops, music, and lectures. All activities in the house invite you to socialize with others. If stepping into Hornbækhus feels more like “coming home” than “coming to visit,” then we have succeeded in our mission.

Hornbækhus has 36 rooms, none of which are identical. You will find details everywhere in the hotel, and great thought and energy have gone into each of them.

We are located in the heart of Hornbæk – an old fishing village in North Zealand, with the nearest large town being Helsingør. From here, a ferry to Swedish Helsingborg takes 20 minutes, and if you’re driving from Copenhagen to Hornbæk, you can do so in less than an hour. The area surrounding Hornbækhus offers nature experiences year-round, and with long sandy beaches and the forest from 1793, you’ll find both historical relics and wildlife.

About Villa Strand

When Hornbækhus reopened in 2018, the little sister, Villa Strand, also opened. Hornbækhus and Villa Strand are two parts of the same hotel, and it takes only two minutes to walk from one to the other. When you stay at Villa Strand, you are just as much a part of everything happening at Hornbækhus as when you stay at Hornbækhus and are part of everything happening at Villa Strand. Villa Strand is located next to Hornbæk Beach, where you can wake up to a view of the sand dunes.

Villa Strand consists of the white main house and an annex in the garden, with a total of 15 rooms.
Some rooms have a view of the beach, while others overlook the garden.

The villa is surrounded by a large green garden, which all guests are welcome to use. With a view of the sand dunes at Hornbæk Beach, you can almost hear the sound of the waves, and in about a 2-minute walk, you’ll be at the water’s edge.

The garden is perfect for both relaxation and activities. There is a petanque court and a beach volleyball net, and during the summer, there will be live music, markets, and other summer activities. When you stay at Villa Strand, you are just as much a part of everything happening at Hornbækhus.

The beach bar in Villa Strand’s garden is open from late June to early August, when the weather is good.

Inside, you’ll find soft, floral sofas and chairs where you can lean back and relax. There is also a ping-pong table, which all guests are welcome to use as they wish.
